Our second day was busy again but fun. We first landed in downtown Jackson to see the Memorial to the Confederate Dead and the Old Capitol building. The wonderful art deco World War I memorial was a great contrast. From the Mississippi capitol to the old Greenwood Cemetery our we explored the remembrances of a time past.
We had a wonderful break at a local southern eatery serving southern favorites buffet style on a 100 year old building.
Our last destination was downtown Montgomery. Our lunch had put us behind schedule so mot everything was open but students called ahead and convinced the First White House of the Confederacy to stay open so that they could tour the building. They repaid his kindness by making a number of purchases at his gift shop. So students explored the many sites such as the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and the Alabama Civil War Memorial. This last one was particularly poignant since the Governor had ordered all flags removed the day before. We did not see any protestors but a rally is scheduled for Saturday. Our trip has taken on added meaning and relevance with current events.....and it rained.
